Vinyl's Resurgence Drives Demand for Soulful Sounds

London, UK – In a world increasingly dominated by digital music, vinyl records have made a remarkable comeback, captivating music lovers with their nostalgic charm and superior sound quality. This resurgence has particularly benefited niche genres like soul music, and labels like Expansion Records are riding the wave of popularity.

Vinyl records have seen a steady rise in sales over the past decade, driven by a variety of factors. Nostalgia, the tactile experience of owning physical music, and the superior fidelity of vinyl have all contributed to its appeal. Moreover, limited edition releases such Cornel CC Carter’s “Expressions of Soul” and exclusive vinyl-only tracks such as Output/Input’s “Here We Go Again”, and Marvin Gaye’s vinyl 7” single “Where Are We Going” have further fueled the demand for this vintage format amongst the soul cognoscenti.

Soul music, with its rich history and emotional depth, is a genre that particularly lends itself to the vinyl format. The warmth and authenticity of vinyl perfectly complement the soulful sounds and heartfelt lyrics that define this genre.

Expansion Records, the UK-based label specialising in soul music for the last 35 years, has experienced a surge in popularity, reflecting the broader trend in vinyl sales. By offering a curated selection of classic soul records and contemporary releases, the label has captured the hearts of vinyl enthusiasts and soul music fans alike.  In addition it has been aided with new website technology provided by iNterGine.com and supported by site-spark.website, which has seen an increase in monthly unique visitors and top ranking in search engines for a number of its current and back catalogue releases.

“Our previous website was static and for a small label focused on delivering quality music to its core fans, there is no budget to hire experts, but when we heard about this new technology to help us reach a much wider audience, we were sceptical at first, but are delighted with the results.” A spokesperson for Expansion Records said.

As the vinyl renaissance continues to gain momentum, it is clear that this format is here to stay. For those who appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship of music, vinyl offers a unique and immersive listening experience that cannot be replicated by digital streaming.

Marvin Gaye - Where Are We Going? (3:52)

Recorded in 1973, these two gems were originally album tracks on Marvin’s “You’re The Man” LP. Now these two gems curated by the Mizell Brothers are back to back for the first time on a 7” single. While on Expansion, the label art pays homage to Tamla. Marvin was never on Motown. There is a later, alternative remix of “Where Are We Going”, but this 7” is the 1973 original.

Ronnie McNeir

Ronnie McNeir is the first artist to release an album on Expansion Records.

Originally on LP (EXLPM1) and later CD (EXCDP1), “Love Suspect” was Ronnie’s first independently released album, having previously recorded with RCA, Prodigal/Motown, and Capitol.

He’s from Camden, Alabama, and besides his own recordings, he has written and produced for an array of artists, including The Four Tops, Bobby Womack, Johnnie Taylor, L.J. Reynolds, the Rance Allen Group, and The Dramatics.

In the 90s, he joined The Four Tops, first as Music Director and from 1999 as a replacement singer. He has a very different voice from Levi Stubbs, but a signature voice of his own, adored by fans, and tours as a Four Top to this day. Fellow original group member Obie Benson, who co-wrote “What’s Going On” for Marvin Gaye, is a co-producer of this first album and returned for the second album, “Life & Love,” in 1989, including the opening song “Hold On”, released as an Expansion single. Since then, Expansion released Ronnie’s 1976 Motown album “Love’s Comin’ Down” with bonus tracks only available on this CD, and two further singles, “The Good Side Of Your Love” and “My Baby”. Ronnie is also known for his northern soul hit with his 1966 recording “Sitting In My Class.”

Expansion has brought Ronnie to the UK on more than one occasion, most recently for the Blackpool International Soul Festival.
